Phoenix-Wollongong

The Phoenix is currently the largest proposed development for the Wollongong CBD. The building is located on the old Dairy Farmers Distribution Centre site on Gladstone Avenue, Coniston and proposes to consist of four nine storey residential towers that have a capacity for 207 residential apartments. The ground floor mezzanine will offer commercial and retail opportunities which could potentially revitalise Wollongong's western CBD precinct.

KFW has provided traffic and civil engineering consultancy services to this project thus far. Our brief included undertaking a major flood study to resolve large overland stormwater flow issues. The presence of old balloon pipe constrains the site and in conjunction with the developer, Nicolas Daoud and Co. Pty. Ltd. it was determined that the pipe remain to integrate overland flow into the development. Retention of the pipe echoes the history of its construction and the development proposes to enhance the pipe's heritage value through means of a viewing platform and sunken mall/cafe.

By proposing to provide parking for 343 vehicles traffic was an essential consideration. Traffic ingress and egress has been planned to occur on adjoining streets and completely avoids the main arterial of Gladstone Avenue. This proposal minimises any major impact on intersections with Gladstone Avenue helping to avoid potential traffic queues and incidents.
